"Only the landscape" by Lehel Kovács

„...nobody should beleive that painting landscapes is merely about being at the right spot at the right time, with fresh eyes and with the professional routine of a good painter...
One that goes on the adventure of landscape painting has to somehow turn true - sometime before taking the first deep breath in order to make the first brushstroke. He or she has to see the energy that is burried in the earth and is holding the sky, that is in the trees and waters and stones, at least for one short enlightening moment – that is how a good landscape painting is made.”

from painter Mózes Incze’s opening speech

The exhibition „Only the Landscape” featuring Lehel Kovács’s works at Art Factory Gallery II. is taking us back to the origins of plein-air painting in Hungary, the Nagybánya artist colony, and even further than that. Although feeding on this rich classical tradition, Kovacs is examining contemporary subjects and re-defines the notion of landscape painting. Be it small or huge, his paintings are extremely sensitive, special works of art.

In the present exhibition Kovács’s latest works from 2008 can be seen. Although he is known for his smaller-sized paintings, this time some huge canvases are exhibited from him as well, juxtaposed with the smaller works in our little exhibition space. This way we jump back and forth in space and in time as well, taking the viewers on a journey from the Margaret Island at sunset, to Croatia in the summer sunshine, to the Transilvanian mountains and other places.

Kovács Lehel was born at Sepsiszentgyörgy, Romania, in 1974. Graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Art, is member of the Sensaria Cultural Association, of the Élesd Art Camp and MAMÜ Cultural Association.
